Outside soccer, LIV Golf is also one of the organizations that pays its athletes best, helping names such as Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer appear on the list of the highest-paid players in history.
Sportico, a magazine specializing in sports statistics, published a list of the athletes who accumulated the most wealth throughout their careers.
The athletes featured on the list amassed an impressive combined total of US$50 billion adjusted for inflation, of which US$35.5 billion represents salaries, prize money, endorsements, and other income associated with their celebrity status.
1st Michael Jordan — US$3.75 Billion
The highest-paid athlete in history earned most of his money through a major advertising contract with Nike. The agreement entitled him to a percentage of Air Jordan sales, the shoe Jordan launched in partnership with Nike. The growth in shoe sales generated enormous annual income for MJ. The six-time NBA champion accumulated approximately US$2.7 billion after leaving the court, equivalent to US$3.75 billion adjusted for inflation.
2nd Tiger Woods — US$2.66 Billion
Tiger Woods is an iconic figure in golf who left an indelible mark on both the sport and popular culture. Beyond his achievements on the course, Woods became a prominent figure in business and sports marketing. He signed lucrative endorsement agreements with companies such as Nike, Buick, Rolex, and others, contributing significantly to his accumulated wealth.
3rd Cristiano Ronaldo — US$1.92 Billion

The most successful Portuguese athlete in sports history is also the third-highest-paid athlete of all time. In addition to his undeniable success on the field, which earned him excellent contracts, CR7 appeared extensively in advertising throughout his career. Ronaldo is also an entrepreneur with investments in several successful companies, including a fashion brand, a hotel chain, and even a soccer club in his home region, Madeira.
4th Arnold Palmer — US$1.76 Billion
This may be a less familiar name to Brazilians, but golfer Arnold Palmer is one of the most successful athletes in sports history. Palmer won numerous major titles, including four Masters Tournaments, two Open Championships, and one US Open. Away from the course, he was also one of the highest-paid athletes of his era through both golf earnings and sponsorship agreements and business investments. He founded a golf-course management company, designed more than 300 courses worldwide, and lent his name to products ranging from clothing to beverages. Palmer died in 2016 but left a great legacy in his sport.
5th LeBron James — US$1.7 Billion

The American basketball giant accumulated earnings through exceptional contracts during his brilliant career. LeBron piled up trophies and broke numerous records in the world's biggest basketball league. To expand his wealth beyond the court, he also partnered with companies such as Nike, Coca-Cola, Beats by Dre, and many others. James also holds stakes in media, technology, food and beverage companies, among other sectors.
6th Lionel Messi — US$1.67 Billion
Messi's career as one of the greatest soccer players of all time produced excellent rewards. On the field, the Argentine had a remarkable career at Barcelona, winning numerous titles, including 10 La Liga championships, seven Copas del Rey, and four UEFA Champions Leagues. Although more private about his personal life, Messi has endorsement contracts with several well-known brands, including Chinese giant Huawei, Pepsi, Adidas, and beverage company Gatorade.
7th Jack Nicklaus — US$1.67 Billion

Jack Nicklaus was the leading golfer of the 1960s, winning an impressive 18 major titles, including six Masters Tournaments, five PGA Championships, four US Opens, and three Open Championships. Nicklaus is also known for his success as a golf-course designer and businessman. His company, Nicklaus Design, is one of the leading firms in the field and has designed several world-famous golf courses.
