Some people have already been able to watch Detective Pikachu at test screenings, including Jordan Vogt-Roberts, director of Kong: Skull Island and the future Metal Gear Solid movie.
The director had positive impressions of the film and said on hisTwitter account:

A wild JORD appeared! #DetectivePikachu used MIND BLOWN.It was super effective!
The video game curse has been broken.
Whenever a Pokémon is on screen, you are struck by a charisma similar to Tony Stark tinkering with robots in Iron Man.
Also, PSYDUCK stole the show!
The "curse" Jordan refers to is the public perception
that movies based on video games are bad. This perception is apparent in public opinion regarding films such as Super Mario Bros. (1993) and Sonic the Hedgehog, which will be released later this year.
Although Detective Pikachu may seem like a completely original work to an unsuspecting fan, it is based on a Pokémon franchise spin-off of the same name, which received its full release in 2018.
Jordan said more about the film. After a user asked whether it was good, he replied:
Yes! I saw it twice! The world has infinite potential.
This film made me want to run through the streets with the energy of a sports fan celebrating their team's championship.
Jordan's statements carry even more weight if we consider that he is a major video game fan, including a fan of Pokémon. This indicates that the film will also please longtime fans, unlike other game-based movies that seek exclusively to appeal to a new audience.
The film impresses with its visuals
Detective Pikachu tells the story of Tim, a resident of Ryme City, who finds an amnesiac Pikachu that acts as a detective. Surprisingly, they can understand each other, and they team up to solve the mysteries of Pikachu's identity and the disappearance of Tim's father. The film's world blends live action with CGI and is populated by humans and Pokémon.
The film will premiere in Brazil on May 10, 2019, under the title Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.
