Games may be the "audiovisual" medium best able to reach our emotions. After all, unlike movies or books, where we receive information passively, on consoles we actively participate in the proposed universe, and the protagonists "come to life" through our interaction.
In addition, video games are becoming increasingly large and realistic, and many of us devote months to them, leading to an inevitable involvement with the characters and situations. Only you, as a gamer, can understand "the power" games have.
For this reason, we selected ten emotional scenes from games and "games that make you cry." Obviously, this is a selection; if a title you love was left out, mention it in the comments.
Note: The section contains SPOILERS.
Note 2: They are not ranked by importance.
10 - Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (Zack)
Released for PSP, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a prologue to the base game that tells the story of Zack, a first-class soldier who worked alongside Cloud Strife and Sephiroth.
Anyone who played Final Fantasy VII on the first PlayStation knows what to expect from the story of Crisis Core. But even while "knowing everything," people tend to become emotional at the game's conclusion.
9 - Sonic Unleashed (Saying Goodbye to Chip)
Who would have thought a Sonic game could be moving? Well, Sonic Unleashed proves it can!
Throughout the adventure, we see the friendship between the blue hedgehog and Chip develop. In terms of the plot, Chip remained exclusive to this game. Their separation at the end is something that moves any fan of the series.
8 - Gears of War 2 (Dom and Maria)
One of the objectives in Gears of War 2 is for protagonist Dom to find his wife, Maria. Their reunion is indisputably an emotional scene, both at the beginning with a moment of happiness and at the end with a moment of anguish.
Many argue that the classic trilogy "shone" not only because of gratuitous violence, but because of an engaging story, charismatic characters, and emotional moments such as the video above.
7 - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (Naomi)
Metal Gear Solid 4 presents protagonist Solid Snake at a much older age than in previous games, since this game is set in 2014, which coincides with the title's release year.
Without a doubt, one of the most emotional scenes is Naomi's death, which even moves those who did not like her very much.
To make the scene even more emotionally manipulative, a remastered version of the song "Enclosure" from the first Metal Gear Solid plays, delivering a "shot" to the heart of nostalgic players and series fans.
6 - The Last of Us (Sarah's Death)
Considered by many to be one of the best games of all time, it is impressive how engaging and dramatic it manages to be, with many people saying this scene is one of the most emotionally powerful.
5 - Valiant Hearts (The Protagonist's Murder)
Set during the First World War, Ubisoft's Valiant Hearts is a kind of "indie game" made by a professional studio.
Given the wartime atmosphere, the game can be expected to have a melancholy setting, which is also reflected in characters living through very extreme situations. There are violent deaths and considerable bloodshed.
Even with all that, the ending manages to move even the "coldest hearts."
4 - Life is Strange (Choose the World or Love)
Life is Strange is a game with a strong emphasis on narrative that puts you through a "whirlwind of emotions" over its five episodes.
Without a doubt, the most emotional moment is the choice that must be made at the very end of the final chapter.
3 - Undertale (Pacifist Ending)
Undertale is one of those indie games that surprises you very positively because you "expect nothing" from it.
Made almost entirely by one person, Toby Fox, the game has very simple visuals, old-fashioned systems, characters with few animation frames, and plenty of text dialogue.
Despite having everything it needs to be a "boring game," this game easily makes any list of the "best indie games" because of how engaging it is, proving that what matters more than the resources you have is how you use them.
Just as a game can have excellent graphics, an excellent script, excellent gameplay, and simply "not be fun," the reverse is also true.
Without a doubt, everyone who reached the good ending was moved. Poetry in game form.
2 - To The Moon (Making a Dream Come True)
Another title that could not be left off the list, this one is also surprising because it was developed in RPG Maker and arrived on Steam in an understated way.
Like Undertale, To The Moon is further proof that technical limitations do not prevent you from becoming emotional and invested in the characters. However, you need to play from beginning to end to understand the power of the scenes.
1 - The Walking Dead Season One (Lee Becoming a Zombie)
Similar to Life is Strange, Telltale's The Walking Dead has several surprising scenes, with highly unexpected and "shocking" moments that can only be fully understood by playing the game from beginning to end.
However, the highlight is the final scene, whose "weight" can only be understood by those who played from start to finish.
