SEGA released a new trailer today (08/20) for Mario & Sonic At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the new game in the crossover series starring the two most famous characters in video game history. In addition to showing a little more of the gameplay already seen in the original trailer, the trailer previewed the game's new mode: Tokyo 1964 mode.
The mode consists of taking the characters into a 2D aesthetic, paying tribute to the classic games where the characters originated, as well as paying tribute to the last time the Olympics took place in Japan: in 1964. The characters from the Mario series use their look in Super Mario Bros. as a basis, while the Sonic characters use the look from the 16-bit era as a basis.
A specific release date for the game was also announced: November 5, 2019 in the Americas and November 8 in Europe. The game will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch, although a version featuring only characters from the Sonic series is being made for Android and iOS devices. An arcade version is also being made.
