In an announcement on the Minecraft website, developer Mojang announced the cancellation of development on the "Super Duper" mode, announced at E3 2017.

As seen in the trailer, the mode would make the game more attractive than "Fancy," currently the title's most advanced graphics option. It would be released through a graphics pack and would also be available in 4K on compatible devices.

In the announcement, the developers highlighted expectations surrounding the mode as well as their dissatisfaction with its performance:

We know this will disappoint some people — there was a lot of enthusiasm for Super Duper both inside and outside the studio — but unfortunately, we are not happy with its performance across devices. For that reason, we are ending development of the mode and looking for other ways to let you experience Minecraft in a new light.

The probable reason for ending development is also discussed: the difficulty of implementing advanced graphics across the many platforms that have Minecraft.

Minecraft is available on many platforms, and we are constantly trying to optimize the use of each platform's technical architecture. We will talk more about this in the near future.

It is worth remembering that Minecraft is available on all current-generation consoles, in addition to the Java Edition for computers, the Windows 10 Edition optimized for Windows 10, and the Pocket Edition for mobile devices.

Several game mods already improve the game's appearance with textures, shaders, and other options, but Super Duper would have been included in the game itself, selectable by players alongside the "Fast" and "Fancy" modes. It was expected that Super Duper would demand more from the platforms running the title.
