Various media outlets are always speculating that the PlayStation 5 could be unveiled with each passing year. With rumors about the PS5 continually circulating since 2016, Sony executives keep "postponing" players' hopes for a new generation of graphics and power. The brand's most recent release was the PlayStation 4 Pro, with the ability to run graphics in 4K on compatible televisions.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Japanese company wants to use the next three years to develop new technologies that will allow it to take a “next step,” as explained by Tsuyoshi Kodera himself, Sony's Executive Vice President responsible for the console brand.
“We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump even higher in the future,” said the brand's Executive Vice President.
In a conversation with a small group of journalists, the executive confirmed that PlayStation's services business has changed the way Sony thinks about the market. “We need to change the way we look at the console life cycle. We are no longer in an era when we can think of the console or the network as though they were two different things,” said Tsuyoshi Kodera, indicating that the console's life cycle may not be the same as in past generations.
Console life cycles since the first PlayStation was released in 1994 have averaged 6 to 7 years. PlayStation 4 was released in 2013.
