Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo's crossover game featuring several video game properties, may have just gained another Sonic series character for its roster. Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic's famous rival and the series' second-most-popular character according to a SEGA poll, was spotted in a 'leaked' image that supposedly showed the game's complete roster.

In a post published on Snapshot, a man reportedly revealed the game's full roster by accident, including Shadow. The image did not completely obscure the name of the person responsible for the post, leading dedicated fans to discover through LinkedIn that he worked for a French marketing firm that handled displays for several companies, including Bandai Namco, the co-developer of Smash Bros. Ultimate. Later, according to an investigation conducted by Nintendo Actu, it was discovered and verified that the graphic designer responsible for the leak was indeed involved with the game's marketing.

In addition to Shadow, other characters such as Banjo-Kazooie, Geno from Super Mario RPG, Ken from Street Fighter, and Mach Rider can be seen in the image. Although the image could be fake, the way it was edited and the confirmation that the person who posted it had ties to Bandai Namco certainly help add credibility. However, another element that lends further weight to the leak is something many would not expect—the Grinch.

Several marketing materials for the new Illumination Pictures film were found scattered throughout the image, including a render of the character seen from behind that could not be found on the internet.

Whether this image is real or not, we will probably have our answer soon. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be released for all Nintendo Switch users on December 7.
