Since its official launch in December 2011, the PS Vita did not meet the expectations of many people who invested their money in Sony's handheld platform. However, the console is apparently finally reaching its end.
The official Japanese PlayStation website said that shipments of the two PS Vita models produced in Japan (PS Vita Black and PS Vita Aqua Blue) were scheduled to end soon, just as Sony Interactive Entertainment had previously confirmed that production of the handheld would end in 2019.
The exact date for the end of console production in Japan had not yet been announced, but as a reference, it is worth remembering that when Sony ended PlayStation 3 production in May 2017, the same website had given this notice two months earlier.
Regarding the Western market (the United States and Europe), physical PS Vita games would stop being produced in March 2019, although their production would continue in Japan.
Despite having relative success in Japan, the PS Vita has an installed base of only 16 million consoles sold worldwide. Although not impressive, it still achieved better numbers than Nintendo's Wii U, with several games still planned for release in 2019.
