Capcom used this year's E3 to confirm the Resident Evil 2 remake for 2019. Following this announcement, fans began wondering what the franchise's next original game might be. Rumors point to the third chapter in the Resident Evil: Revelations saga, which found success by telling an alternative story within the original plot, but with the characters we are used to seeing in the game's universe.
Last year, the company released Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and gave the game franchise a fresh feel. In addition to introducing first-person gameplay, the producers sought to make a game with less action and more horror. The formula worked, the game was a sales success, and it even made our list of must-play games for PlayStation 4.PlayStation 4.
However, this means that a possible eighth installment in the franchise may take some time to be released. After the arrival of the Resident Evil 2 remake, the producers may choose to continue the Revelations saga, whose last original game was released in 2015. Another sign was the franchise's positive sales result on Nintendo Switch. A special edition for the Japanese producer's new console was released in late 2017 and sold nearly 300,000 copies at the beginning of this year. Those numbers are enough for Capcom to invest in a new game in the franchise.
The Resident Evil: Revelations Saga and Its Characters
Released in 2012, the first game in the Resident Evil: Revelations series tells the story of a terrorist attack in the city of Terragrigia. The player controls four characters, always in pairs. Jill Valentine, a character known from the classics, and newcomer Parker Luciani join forces to investigate an abandoned ship in the ocean that is involved in the plot. Meanwhile, Chris Redfield, also a regular in the original story, teams up with newcomer Jessica Sherawat in the parallel storyline.
Following the first game's sales success, Resident Evil: Revelations 2 took only three years to arrive. This time, the game is set on an island used as a testing laboratory. The protagonist is Claire Redfield, a character from Resident Evil 2, who is kidnapped along with Moira Burton, Barry Burton's daughter. Barry, also a playable character, previously appeared in the first game of the main franchise. He sets out to find his missing daughter and meets the young Natalia Korda on the island.
Rumors about the franchise's third chapter are scarce, as Capcom tends to keep game plots secret. However, the first two games are not direct sequels to each other, so new stories can be expected. Rumors suggest that characters such as Sherry Birkin, from Resident Evil 2, and Jake Muller, last seen in Resident Evil 6, could be the new protagonists. Two other characters who could also appear, both from the sixth chapter as well, are Ada Wong and Helena Harper. Fans can also remain hopeful about a possible appearance by Albert Wesker, the series' most popular villain.
Horror Could Return to the Middle of the Ocean
Although the franchise's two chapters achieved similar levels of success, the first Revelations was acclaimed by critics for its horror atmosphere. The zombies' physical appearance was influenced by the combination of the virus and ocean water, resulting in details reminiscent of marine animals. For this reason, some fans hope Capcom will repeat the same setting for a third installment. In addition, the producer would also be riding the wave of recent announcements with the same theme.
If the setting catches your attention, take a look at some of the latest developments in the gaming world:
Scheduled for release this year, developer Snowbird Games announced the survival game Feral Blue. In a world flooded by the ocean, the player will have the freedom to command a ship and face every possible hardship. With the same theme, but already available for purchase, is the pirate game Blackwake, where multiplayer battles can be fought. The theme has also gained ground in online casino games, with Betway Casino getting players into the spirit of sailors through the Emperor of the Sea theme. However, the most anticipated of all is Skull and Bones, from industry giant Ubisoft. With a large investment, the developer hopes to reinvent the genre and produce a true sales success.
Whether that is the theme or even something different, expectations for Resident Evil: Revelations 3 are high among fans. While we are still waiting for an official announcement from Capcom, we have prepared a list of facts about the entire franchise especially for fans. And we will be watching closely to report everything about future rumors, news, and announcements of a new chapter in the Revelations saga.
