SEGA announced a "completely new game" in the Sakura Wars series for platforms that have not yet been announced at SEGA Fes 2018.
The game will take place in the Imperial City of Tokyo during the Taisho era in 1929, but no other information was announced.
The latest game in the main Sakura Wars series, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love, was released for PlayStation 2 in Japan in 2005. It was the only one of the series' many games to be officially released in the West for PlayStation 2 and Wii, in 2010.
In a survey conducted by SEGA of Japan in November 2016, Sakura Wars was chosen by Japanese respondents as the franchise they most wanted to see return. Other games in the top 10 included Virtual-On (which also received a new title in 2018), Shenmue (which had just been announced for a re-release on modern systems), Jet Set Radio, Virtua Fighter, and Panzer Dragoon. Does SEGA also plan to revive these franchises in the future? We will have to wait and see!
[Update 04/15/18] SEGA released an official press release for the new Sakura Wars project, offering some additional details.
The new Sakura Wars game will be released simultaneously in Japan and Asia. More information about the project will be announced during a presentation to be held at some point in the future. When more details about the project and presentation become available, they will be published on the official website for Sakura Wars.
