SEGA announced the Mega Drive Mini at SEGA Fes 2018 in celebration of the console's 30th anniversary. It will be released in Japan in 2018.

The console will feature a large number of beloved Mega Drive classics.

Unfortunately, as of the publication of this article, no information beyond this (such as a release date or price) has been announced.

Update: AtGames will handle production of the Mega Drive Mini, with updated technology. The device will also be released in the West. AtGames stated that SEGA will announce the new features in due course, but says it believes that “fans will not be disappointed.”

Considering that the device is from AtGames but will probably be published by SEGA, we hope that this time it will actually exercise a great deal of quality control over the console, especially if they intend to release it in Japan.

Update 2: AtGames will no longer produce the new Mega Drive, which will be handled by an internal SEGA team. Learn more details here.
