San Diego Comic-Con, one of the world's largest events for geek-culture enthusiasts, held a Sonic panel that brought news about Team Sonic Racing and the IDW comic, along with answers to several fan questions.
The first information concerned the new Sonic comics, with previews of the covers for issues seven, eight, and nine. The ninth issue will mark the beginning of a new story arc called "The Battle for Angel Island."
But those were not the only items of news related to the IDW comics. A new character who will debut in the eighth issue was confirmed: Whisper the Wolf. The character was created by Evan Stanley, her name is a play on the word "Wisp," and her main power is a weapon that can use all the abilities of the alien Wisps.

With the next game in the Sonic series, Team Sonic Racing, drawing closer, the IDW comics will also join in the excitement surrounding the game with a special comic dedicated to it. It will be a prequel written by Caleb Goellner, a newcomer to the series for whom this will be the first story. The Team Sonic Racing comic will be released in October.

As for Team Sonic Racing, new gameplay starring Big the Cat was revealed, showing him racing through an ice stage. Some fans speculate that it is Cool Edge from Sonic Unleashed, but nothing has been confirmed at this time.
A Q&A session was held at the end of the panel, revealing the following details:
- Regarding the return of the Chao Garden, Takashi Iizuka said he does not want to put the Chao into a game in just any manner, but wants to do it in a way that will satisfy fans. A Chao Garden could possibly be released in the future if the context is right.
- Regarding Mighty, Ray, and Team Hooligan appearing in modern games, it was said that we will "hardly ever see" these characters, as they are exclusive to Classic Sonic's dimension.
- Team Hooligan will not appear in the IDW comics, indicating that Mighty and Ray may not be in them either.
- Other fans asked about a return for Hyper Sonic. It was said that he will not return in either the games or the comics.
Team Sonic Racing will be released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam at the end of the year.
