Sony recently announced that it had acquired Insomniac Games, making the studio part of Sony Interactive Entertainment Studios.

For those unfamiliar with it, Insomniac Games is known for producing quality games such as the recent Sunset Overdrive, Marvel's Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank.

There is no doubt that this acquisition is very important to future Sony exclusives and the PlayStation platform's continued success, especially after losing the exclusivity of Thatgamecompany, creator of Journey, and Quantic Dream, Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls. We will now wait for major announcements.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (“SIE”) today announced that SIE has entered into definitive agreements to acquire Insomniac Games, Inc. (“Insomniac Games”), a leading game developer and long-standing SIE partner, in its entirety. Insomniac Games is the developer of the bestselling PlayStation 4 (PS4™) title Marvel's Spider-Man and the immensely popular Ratchet & Clank franchise. Upon completion of the acquisition, Insomniac Games will join Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios' (“SIE WWS”) global development operation. Insomniac Games is the 14th studio to join the SIE WWS family. This addition reinforces SIE's continued commitment to creative excellence and innovation in developing games exclusively for PlayStation platforms.

Based in Burbank, California, and Durham, North Carolina, Insomniac Games is the award-winning studio behind many of PlayStation's most successful franchises, including Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance. Most recently, Insomniac Games, in partnership with SIE and Marvel Games, released Spider-Man, one of the most acclaimed PS4 games of 2018. Marvel's Spider-Man has sold more than 13.2 million copies worldwide.

In addition to the studio's distinctive storytelling, filled with humor and highly interactive worlds, Insomniac Games has been recognized for its collaborative workplace culture, receiving 20 awards since 2005.

Building on a working relationship between Insomniac Games and SIE that spans more than 20 years, this acquisition reinforces the creative strength within SIE WWS and formally adds to the PlayStation family a studio that continues to raise the bar for open-world games. Insomniac Games' day-to-day operations following the close of the acquisition are expected to be handled by the current management team in conjunction with SIE WWS San Mateo Studio. Completion of the acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The financial terms of this transaction, including the acquisition cost, are not being disclosed due to contractual commitments.

“Insomniac Games is one of the most acclaimed development studios in the industry, and its legacy of best-in-class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled,” said Shawn Layden, president of SIE WWS. “We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and we are thrilled to officially welcome them into the Worldwide Studios family. The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE WWS reiterates our commitment to developing world-class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.”

"Joining the WWS family gives Insomniac even more opportunities to fulfill our studio vision of making positive and lasting impressions on people's lives," said Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac Games. “We have enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically from the beginning. Our partnership amplifies our potential, and Marvel's Spider-Man was proof of that. We are excited to take the next step in our growth alongside our long-standing partners at WWS. Above all, we look forward to delivering new experiences to our fans.”
