Building levels

Several new elements were added to the level-building tool.

Super Mario Maker 2 Will Have Online Multiplayer, New Themes, and More #2

Alongside the four styles based on Super Mario games, there is a new Super Mario 3D World style, which is 2.5D rather than the other styles' 2D. Since this style works differently, levels built in it are independent and cannot be interwoven with other styles.

There are also new background themes to choose from: snow, desert, sky, and forest. For styles that did not have these settings in their original games, Koji Kondo composed new background music.

Nintendo also added a nighttime version to every theme, old or new. The level rules change depending on the theme, with effects such as low gravity, inverted gravity, strong winds, and floating Goombas.

Another new option lets creators change the conditions for completing a level. Mario can now be required to collect a specific number of coins, defeat a number of enemies, and more, adding variety to each level's objectives.

As promotional material had already indicated, it is possible to build levels with another person, provided the controller is shared.

There are other small additions to level customization, all visible in greater detail in the Direct itself. They include ramps, hooks, new enemies, custom auto-scroll, and new sound effects.

Story Mode

In this offline single-player mode, Mario must rebuild Princess Peach's castle using coins collected by completing levels already included in the game. As the castle is built, Mario can interact with more characters.

There are more than 100 levels in total, similarly to the single-player mode in the Nintendo 3DS port of Super Mario Maker.

Online

The game's online functionality lets players share and download levels. The search tools are more detailed than those in the original Super Mario Maker, responding to fan requests.

In addition to the modes in the first game, a multiplayer mode will be available, both competitively and cooperatively, and both can also be played locally.

Four players compete against one another

In competitive mode, up to four players compete to finish a level first. The level is chosen randomly from those categorized as "multiplayer versus" by creators around the world. Online play uses a ranking system based on the player's win rate.

Super Mario Maker 2 arrives on June 28 for Nintendo Switch.
