The gameplay of Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair will consist of 2.5D platforming stages, with a 3D hub world and an isometric camera focused on exploration and puzzles that connects the stages.

Yooka-Laylee was considered a spiritual successor to the Banjo-Kazooie franchise, created with the goal of reviving the game's genre, which was not as popular when it launched. Now the sequel appears to have other inspirations, such as some The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong Country games. This is reinforced by the game's own Steam page, which mentions that part of the creative team behind Donkey Kong Country is involved in development.

The first game had music composed by Grant Kirkhope, who also composed for games such as Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64, with a unique and fun style that is easy to recognize. Now another famous composer will join the team: David Wise, composer of other classic soundtracks such as those for Donkey Kong Country, famous for atmospheric music that also appears in the recent title Snake Pass.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair will launch for Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2019.
