OpenAI, one of the leading organizations in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and responsible for developing ChatGPT and DALL-E, has pioneered innovations that shape part of our future. Since its founding, the organization has been at the forefront of research and the development of advanced AI systems, seeking not only to promote technological advances but also to ensure that these innovations are beneficial and ethical for humanity.
OpenAI recently announced its newest project: Sora. This project represents a bold step toward AI's new frontiers. In this article, we will discuss more of the new features in OpenAI's Sora project, which promises to change the audiovisual market as we know it today.
What Is the Sora Project?
Named “Sora,” meaning “sky” in Japanese, this artificial-intelligence model will be able to generate videos from text or images. Although similar models already exist on the market, Sora's distinguishing feature is its knowledge base in language models such as GPT. This makes Sora capable of accurately interpreting video instructions and creating detailed, engaging scenes, presenting complex camera movements and realistic characters in a surprisingly natural way.
To achieve this degree of realism, the model employs an advanced technique called Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), in which two neural-network models compete with each other: a generator responsible for creating the images and a discriminator tasked with evaluating them. This process of constant competition and improvement enables Sora to generate increasingly convincing results.
At first, the videos will be around 60 seconds long while maintaining both visual quality and consistency with the command given by the user. The model's quality and its ability to replicate the physics of light and shadow, movement, and composition almost flawlessly certainly represent a revolution for the audiovisual industry.
Who Will Be Able to Use Sora?
At this pre-release stage, according to OpenAI, the tool is being made available to “red teamers,” a group of cybersecurity experts, to assess risks and ensure that the artificial intelligence does not produce harmful or inappropriate content. In addition, the company is granting access to visual artists, designers, and filmmakers to obtain feedback on how to make the model more useful to these professionals.
Despite the company's intention to promote more democratized use of AI, there is currently no timeline or additional information to share about Sora's broader public availability. OpenAI has promoted several important safety measures, including engaging politicians, educators, and artists from around the world to understand their concerns and identify positive use cases for this new technology.
Questions About How Sora Will Be Used: Beneficial or Not?
Since the project is still in the testing phase, safety procedures are still being developed. In addition to the assessments performed by the “red teamers,” tools are being created to identify false content and issue an alert when a video has been generated by Sora.
The company also announced another safety measure: a text classifier that will examine and reject requests that violate usage policies, such as incitement to violence, sexual content, hateful imagery, misuse of celebrity likenesses, or third-party intellectual property. Image classifiers were also created to review the frames of every generated video, ensuring compliance with usage policies before publication.
Despite extensive research and testing, it is impossible to predict the ways people will use the technology—essentially, whether they will be seen as beneficial or not. That is why learning from real-world use is a critical component in creating and releasing increasingly safe AI systems over time.
Even with all the uncertainties inherent in the launch of a new technology, one certainty remains: with every advance in AI, we move closer to a future in which the boundaries between the real and the artificial are so intertwined that our lives may be significantly transformed. Sora promises to be another step in that direction.
