Persona 5 was a major success for Atlus. After receiving the Best RPG award at The Game Awards 2017 and selling more than 2 million copies, Atlus posted a teaser website in December 2018 for the mysterious Persona 5 R without revealing many details. Now Atlus has officially announced Persona 5: The Royal for PlayStation 4, which will also be an RPG.
A short commercial was also released. In it, a voice asks:
“What do you think of the Phantom Thieves?”
A female voice responds:
“I think helping people is wonderful, but to be honest, I don't like them. I don't think the Phantom Thieves' methods will make the world a better place or help anyone. In the end, I feel that you can only resolve this by yourself.”
New Persona 5: The Royal trailer
It is still unknown whether this will be a direct sequel to Persona 5, a side story, or a version of the game with additional content, or whether it will be released for more platforms. Many people speculated that this new version would be a port of the game to Nintendo Switch, but so far, through the teaser website and Atlus's official announcement, the only confirmed platform is PS4.
Another rumor concerns the inclusion of a female character who would accompany Joker in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She may be the new character from the Persona 5: The Royal trailer, but this also does not confirm that a Switch version of the game will exist.
Atlus promised to reveal more information about the game on April 24 at the Persona Super Live concert.
In addition to the commercial, the Persona 5: The Royal teaser website can be found here.
