We have known for some time that PlayStation 4 was leading sales in this generation, but few imagined that the figure was already approaching the 100 million mark. Sony recently made a public announcement that its home console had reached 94.2 million units sold, putting it far ahead of its direct competitors.

One interesting detail is that, of this total, 8.1 million PlayStation 4 units were sold in the final quarter of 2018, which ended on December 31 after Black Friday and Christmas. Although Sony is celebrating these impressive figures, they still represent a decline of 0.9 million units compared with the same period in the 2017 fiscal year.

According to reports, Sony has set a goal of selling a total of 17 million PlayStation 4 units by March 31, 2019, the closing date of its fiscal year. Apparently, it will achieve its goal.

Below are a few more statistics about PlayStation 4:

  • On December 31, PlayStation Plus reached 36.3 million subscribers, an increase of 2.1 million users compared with 2017;
  • In the fourth semester of 2018 alone, Sony sold 87.2 million software units for PlayStation 4. This represents an increase of 0.7 million units over its previous fiscal year. It is worth noting that 37% of these sales were through digital downloads.

With these figures, we imagine that Sony must not be in a hurry to release its PlayStation 5.
