Sony recently announced that the PlayStation 4 had surpassed the incredible mark of 100 million units sold worldwide. These figures were released alongside the company’s latest fiscal-quarter results.

According to specialist Daniel Ahmad:

the PS4 is now the home console in all of gaming history to reach 100 million units sold the fastest.

The interesting thing is that it even surpasses the company’s greatest success, since the PS4 reached this mark in five years and four months, while the PS2 took five years and nine months to reach it.

When asked about the console’s future, Sony said it still expects to sell at least 15 million PS4 units by March 2020. It is worth noting that despite its success, the company was still expecting higher figures; according to the report, that did not happen because the console sold less software than expected, especially third-party software.

With these numbers, PlayStation 4 joins the select list of consoles that have surpassed 100 million units sold. The others are Nintendo Wii, Game Boy (Color), PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo DS. And what about PlayStation 5? Will it be able to maintain this success?
