Several games coming to Nintendo's future console were shown during the Nintendo Switch presentation. Puyo Puyo Tetris appeared in a montage featuring several titles. Shortly afterward, SEGA Japan itself confirmed that the game would come to Switch under the name Puyo Puyo Tetris S.

What was even more surprising was that SEGA of America announced the game for the West shortly afterward, confirming earlier rumors that it would come here. Strangely, the game will reach the West only on PS4 and Switch (it was also released for PS3, PS Vita, 3DS, Wii U, and Xbox One in Japan), and the PS4 version will be available only physically, which is stranger still. Licensing for Tetris-based games appears to be more complicated than we imagined.

SEGA launched an official website for the game and pages where players can preorder the PS4 and Switch versions. According to Amazon, the game will be released for US$29.99 on PS4 and US$39.99 on Switch.

It appears that Sam Mullen, the Atlus USA producer responsible for SEGA's Japanese games, was "hiding the game" after all, now that he has confirmed its Western release on Twitter. He also confirmed that the game will be dubbed in English, with no Japanese voice option, and that players will be able to compete online against users of the Japanese version. Cross-platform play will not be possible, however: PS4 players can compete only against other PS4 players, and the same applies to Switch.

Gene Fujimori, another SEGA of America employee, said on Twitter that if the game sells well, the company may become interested in also bringing Puyo Puyo Chronicle, recently released for 3DS in Japan, to the West.

SEGA also released a launch trailer, which you can watch below. Who would have thought that after no Western release since 2004—and at least five games released only in Japan since then—we would finally see Puyo Puyo in the West again!
