After the release of Sonic Forces, many people were curious to know what Sonic Team’s next game would be, and according to a new issue of Famitsu, the team will be shifting some of its focus away from the Sonic series. In this new article in the magazine, the main focus was a discussion about recruiting new planners, producers, designers, and programmers for SEGA, but some details about Sonic Team’s next project were also revealed. Shun Nakamura, producer of Sonic Forces and assistant director of Sonic Team/SEGA CS2, revealed that the New Sakura Wars is being developed by his division.
Nakamura also mentions a topic that some SEGA employees had recently been discussing: the restructuring of the company’s divisions. The teams responsible for developing the Sakura Wars games and Valkyria Chronicles were all merged into Sonic Team. It was originally assumed that this would help the team develop more games starring the mascot, but this new announcement suggests a possible future in which several games from different IPs will be made by Sonic Team instead of the focus remaining on a single franchise.
The New Sakura Wars will be released on modern platforms, and will take place in Tokyo during the Taisho era in 1929.
