Sonic X Shadow Generations, the new game starring the popular blue hedgehog, whose third movie (with Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves) was also scheduled for release that year, surpassed 1 million units sold on its first day, with a peak of more than 5,000 concurrent players on Steam as soon as the game became available.
This release consists of two distinct games in one. The now-classic Sonic Generations, released around 2011 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, was remastered with new content, including the rescue of cute creatures called Chao throughout its stages. The other game, the focus of this package and an entirely new title, is Shadow Generations, which brings a new campaign with new stages and tells a story parallel to that of the blue protagonist.
This new campaign places Shadow in the same chaotic setting that affected the characters in Sonic Generations, in a story involving distortions of time and space where they must travel through familiar places and resolve what is warping the reality of their universe. Shadow takes this story further, explaining its other side and intertwining events in a highly epic adventure.
The story also receives greater focus in this new game. The gameplay includes a 3D version of stages that Shadow visited in earlier games, along with a 2.5D gameplay version of each stage, where the character plays through a refreshed formula based on what appeared in the original Sonic Generations.
With a Metacritic score of 80 and an impressive 97% approval rating on Steam, where players describe it as "overwhelmingly positive," Shadow also has new abilities exclusive to this game, unlocked with each new area reached.
With highly fluid gameplay, Sonic X Shadow Generations combines settings and elements established across the franchise and is available for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC. A high-quality animation that served as an introduction to the game was published on YouTube by SEGA, which owns the franchise, and can be watched below.
