Since making his video-game debut in 1991, Sonic has developed an epic history, winning the hearts of millions of fans around the world. With his charismatic personality and heroic abilities, Sonic became a pop-culture icon, transcending generations and inspiring countless adaptations across different forms of media.

Two theatrical films and a series on Paramount+ were released and achieved fantastic numbers. In December 2024, Sonic 3 arrives in cinemas around the world, promising to be the franchise's best film. Names such as Jim Carey, Keanu Reeves, and Idris Elba will be part of the feature film's cast.

Sonic 3 Producer Discusses the Film's New Features and Possible Two-and-a-Half-Hour Runtime

In a recent interview, Toby Ascher, the film's executive producer, emphasized that the focus will be on expanding the cast of characters and developing even grander narratives. “With plans to include Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic 3 and other major new features, we are aiming for epic, ‘Avengers’-level events in the Sonic franchise's films. Expect immense and exciting stories filled with a variety of characters,” Ascher said.

Paramount, which will distribute the film, is investing heavily in productions connected to the Sonic universe. The “Knuckles” miniseries (Paramount+) is proof of that. The series tells the story of one of the franchise's most beloved characters, a red echidna whose abilities include extraordinary strength and the capacity to climb walls. It is a spin-off of the films, with a plot set between the events of Sonic 2, released in 2022, and its sequel, Sonic 3.

Also speaking about the series, Toby Ascher said, “We are very excited about the prospect of expanding the characters from our universe on television, because it provides us with an ideal platform to explore them more deeply.” The franchise's expansion into television has received a very positive critical response. At the time of this article, it had an average rating of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, a website known for collecting critics' reviews. That score is higher than the first film's 64%, but still slightly below the second film's 69%.

Among rumors based on information leaked from preview screenings, the film may also be the longest in the series, with more than two and a half hours of screen time.

Sonic 3 Has a Star-Studded Cast

Some major names make up the cast of Sonic 3. In addition to Jim Carey, who will return as the classic character Doctor Robotnik, the film brings back names such as Idris Elba (The Dark Tower), Ben Schwartz (House of Lies), and Lee Majdoub (Silent Hill: Revelation). Paramount has also announced some very interesting additions, including actress Krysten Ritter, who shone as the lead in the series Jessica Jones, actor James Wolk (Ordinary Joe), and Sofia Pernas (Blood & Treasure).

The biggest new addition to Sonic's cast, however, was the announcement of Keanu Reeves, who will lend his voice to Shadow. The participation of the star of the Matrix and John Wick sagas was widely reported by several publications.

Because the film's director, Jeff Fowler, also said the third chapter's greatest inspiration is the game Sonic Adventure 2, originally released for the Dreamcast, actress Alyla Browne (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) is another confirmed cast member. She will play a character important to the game's story and to Shadow: Maria Robotnik, who is related to the franchise's main villain.

The screenplay will be written by the duo Patrick Casey and Josh Miller. According to information in the media, the two have worked together on several projects and usually understand each other well creatively. They wrote the first two Sonic films, which were very successful, and Paramount therefore kept them on to work on the saga's third and largest film.
