The news was confirmed by both Sony and the ESA (Entertainment Software Association), the US video-game industry trade association responsible for the annual event held in Los Angeles. PlayStation will not attend next year's event.
In a statement released by Sony to the press regarding E3, the studio said:
“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to think of new ways and opportunities to engage its community. PlayStation fans mean everything to us, and we always seek to innovate, think differently, and experiment with new ways to delight players. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 2019. We are exploring new ways to connect with our community in 2019 and cannot wait to share our plans with you.”
With the recent cancellation of the 2018 edition of PlayStation Experience, together with the decision not to attend E3 2019, Sony will leave a major gap in brand promotion for at least a year. Still, it is believed that a new PlayStation Experience will be held next year, potentially making the wait worthwhile for players in the PlayStation community. And who knows—a future announcement about the PlayStation5could still be made next year.
