In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tobey Maguire, known worldwide for playing Peter Parker in the original trilogy, was asked about his successors, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland, in later films about the web-slinger. Garfield played the role in the two-film series known as The Amazing Spider-Man, while Holland plays him in films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Tobey said that although he had not seen every Spider-Man film released after his last one, Spider-Man 3, he had enjoyed what he saw:

From what I have seen, I appreciated it a lot. I really like both actors [Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland]. I think they are both super talented. I would say that I appreciate them and I like the actors. I like the choices [made by the casting department].

Tobey was then asked whether he would return to the superhero world one day by playing a new character, and he said:

I do not have a mindset of “will I or won't I.” I just do whatever... whatever interests me, something I really feel a strong connection with, which may or may not fit into any kind of box.

The original Spider-Man trilogy was one of the most acclaimed and beloved by fans, considered partly responsible for starting the superhero-movie era that continues today and apparently will remain strong far into the future. Directed by Sam Raimi, known for his horror films, it originally had plans for new films continuing the story, but creative conflicts and discussions with Sony Pictures led to the series ending prematurely.

At the moment, the current web-slinger film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, was the character's first feature to reach the one-billion mark, and plans for another are underway.
