A new Shrek film will begin development. However, it will not continue the story of the beloved ogre we already know. It will be a reboot, meaning a new story will begin with Shrek. Not only will he receive a new version of his film, but Puss in Boots will also have his story restarted.
The decision was made because the franchise that propelled DreamWorks' 3D animation, with its unusual way of mixing fairy tales into a single story, had been without a continuation for almost ten years. It therefore seemed more viable to reboot the series so we can see Shrek on cinema screens again—or, better yet, at home for some good laughs.
For this new version, according to Variety, the director chosen by DreamWorks was Chris Meledandri, head of operations at Illumination and creator and director of the Despicable Me series. Although this is a new version of both films, Meledandri said in the interview that he would like to bring back the original cast to voice the characters again, including actors Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, and Antonio Banderas, so the essence would remain.
