In a recent interview with Variety magazine, Chris Meledandri, CEO of the studio responsible for the Super Mario Bros. animation, said that the film will arrive in theaters no later than 2022. On the same occasion, Meledandri made it clear that they are doing everything under the direct supervision of Shigeru Miyamoto, the character's creator, and also said that the reason the franchise's infamous 1993 live-action film was such a disaster was that there had been no direct contact with Nintendo at the time.

The studio creating the Super Mario animation is called Illumination Entertainment and has a partnership with Universal Studios. Among the successful films they have already released are Minions and The Lorax.

It is worth noting that this is not the only partnership project between Nintendo and Universal Studios, since both are working together on attractions for a theme park that will open in Japan in 2020.

The mustachioed hero's latest game was Super Mario Odyssey for Nintendo Switch, which is the best-selling game on the console.
